Guide to Deal

About/History

Located on the South coast of England, Deal is a charming town with beautiful natural landscapes and an ever growing community atmosphere, underpinned by its fascinating maritime heritage. It is the perfect balance of seaside tranquility and proximity to bustling cities - popular with both commuters and those seeking a lifestyle by the sea.

With connections dating back to the Norman Era, Deal is enriched with historical culture. Deal Castle, built by Henry VIII in 1539 to defend the country, remains one of the best-preserved coastal fortresses in England. In addition, the close proximity to the sea enabled the town to be a key location for naval operations throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. This continued throughout the Second World War; the coastal town became mobilised with the famous Deal Pier being a key location for marine operations. The pier that reaches out to the English Channel today was constructed in 1950 and has a grade 2 listing. The town’s military history is preserved in the local History Museum, portraying its role in the maritime and military affairs of Britain, making it a unique town to explore.
